It’s a Wrap: Facebook and Instagram’s top stats from the Tokyo Olympic Games

With the Tokyo 2020 Games concluding last night, Facebook has unveiled some of the top moments and stars on its platform from the entirety of the Games – highlighting how the world came together online for this special fortnight.

Team Thailand showed their heart and bravery during the Olympics as the hashtag #โอลิมปิกเกมส์drove over 3.8 million interactions on Instagram and Facebook, with the women bringing home a gold and bronze medal. Thai women also dominated the social standings: since the start of the Olympics, on Instagram, the three Thai athletes who gained the most followers were women, led by Ratchanok Intanon (180K follower increase), ‘Tennis’ Panipak Wongpattanakit (178K follower increase), and Popor Sapsiree Taerattanachai (74K increase).

Ratchanok Intanon also drove the most engagements on Instagram by a Thai athlete, with over half a million interactions. Meanwhile, on Facebook, this post by Panipak Wongpattanakit wasthe most engaged post by a Thai athlete, with over 223,000 interactions.

Globally, athletes gained more than 75 million followers and drove more than 410 million interactions on Instagram over the course of the Games. They also created more than 300,000 Stories. Perhaps no athlete owned her moment on social media better than Brazil’s Rayssa Leal.

The skateboarder added the most followers (5.8M) and drove the most interactions (18.44M) on Instagram of all athletes competing in Tokyo. She also had the most-liked Olympic-related Instagram post (4M+ likes) and most-viewed Instagram video (11M+ views) during the Games. Tai Tzu Ying’s post thanking everyone for their support while she competed in Tokyo is the Facebook post from an athlete that drove the most interactions over the course of the Games, with more than 1.3 million interactions.
