Julz Arney, Director of Fitness for Health Technologies, Apple told The Story Thailand that Apple Watch Series 7, powered by Watch OS8, comes up with the 5 key features for cycling including Workouts Reminder, Pause and Resume, Calories Credit, Voice Feedback, and Fault Detection specific for Workouts.

An Activities and Workouts Apps are most popular apps of Apple Watch that many people use them everyday. The three-colour ring encourage people to get movement and do more exercise since it give people the whole picture how active they are in a single day.
Starting the Workouts, it always turns on the traditional sensors like GPS and infrared giving the more accuracy in the moment matrix stage than people expect. Customer’s algorithm for each workouts type, they make you that user to get the most accurate calories and exercise minute credits.
Over the years, Apple continues collected the data, build the algorithm for new Workouts types. Last year, it added Dance, strength training, and cool down into the Workouts app. This year, it makes more to Workouts with the super popular worldwide that are Pilates and meditation.
Workouts app always tracks an indoor cycling. Now, it is to do more for more better experience for all type riders. Start with Workouts Reminder for outdoor ride. Apple Watch now can automatically detect users benign cycling outside and remind them to start Workouts to get all credit they deserved for every ride.
With the advance algorithm analyse the data from the sensor, such as from GPS, heart rate, and gyroscope to understand when users ride in the bicycles. Three minutes passed, Workouts Reminders will automatic alert users to start the app and then get all credits back since started. Users do not need to do starting Workouts quickly, it can be for a while.
“Using the built-in speaker of Apple Watch or AirPods, Apple Watch will now announce workout milestones, including speed and distance at 5 km or 5-mile splits for cycling, halfway, and completion points if you set a goal; session pause and resume reminders; and Activity ring closures,” said Arney.
Pause and Resume feature, Workouts automatically pause it and to resume when users do cycling. It is completely hands-free experience when getting pause and resume the Workouts app when do the outdoor cycling.
It also improve the Calories Credit in bike type, algorithm for cycling always uses the GPS and heart rate sensor to user stand rider’s effort to get the most accurate Calories Credit.
Apple Watch more accurately measures active calories when riding an e-bike, with an updated cycling workout algorithm that evaluates GPS and heart rate data to better determine when users are riding with pedal-assist versus leg power alone.
Voice Feedback, Apple Watch always give users feedback included mile maker, kilometre spent or celebration when users close their rings when they get Workouts. Now, they can get all these without looking at your wrist. It speaks out loud on speaker that built-in or via AirPods or Bluetooth handphone.
“Apple Watch can now detect when you begin cycling and remind you to start a workout so that you get credit for every ride. Apple Watch can now automatically pause when you stop moving, to wait at a stop light for example, and resume when you start again during an outdoor cycling workout,” said Arney.
Fall Detection, first launched three years ago, now it takes this feature step further and make it be more powerful to help more people. It realised that fault is not in everyday activities but also it will be especially in active and exercise when you outside cycling. It upgrades Fault Detection for all Workouts types.
Fall detection algorithms have been updated for cycling to recognize the unique motion and impact of falls while biking. And the algorithms for more dynamic workouts—
like HIIT, basketball, even tennis—have also been updated to better support fall detection.
However, watchOS 8 is available for Apple Watch Series 3 and later. Auto-start reminders for Outdoor Cycling workouts are available on Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch Series 7. Moreover, Fall detection for workouts will come in a watchOS 8 update later this year for Apple Watch Series 4 and later.
