Mitr Phol announces first milestone of success on the net-zero pathway

Mitr Phol Group, the second global sustainability leader in the food industry, announced its first step of success toward becoming net-zero, with Mitr Phol Dan Chang in Suphanburi Province being Thailand’s first Carbon Neutrality Complex as targeted. The complex is recognized by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), or TGO, as it has reduced GHG emissions by over 270,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2eq). In this regard, Mitr Phol plans to achieve the company goals of carbon neutrality within 2030 and Net Zero within 2050.

Buntoeng Vongkusolkit, Chairman of Mitr Phol Group, said: “At Mitr Phol Group, business sustainability is what we have adhered to and executed for a long time, as we area player in the agricultural and food sector which involves a large number of stakeholders. That means every phase of our operations entails ‘sustainability’. We are committed to ushering the agricultural sector so that it can contribute to global and environmental sustainability while renewable energy is one of key factors to reduce GHG emissions and lessen dependence on natural resources for the betterment of the world. Mitr Phol Group has operated the business under the ‘From Waste to Value Creation’ notion, which integrates technologies and innovations to improve the production process, reshaping the sugar business into biomass power production. The success of Mitr Phol Dan Chang is therefore a testament to our determination and actions of becoming a net-zero organization and sustainable contributor to the economy, society, and the environment.”

Mitr Phol Dan Chang, Suphanburi Province, is a complex consisting of 7 connected plants, starting from a sugar factory. Resources remaining from the sugar production process will be leveraged at the biomass and bio-based power plants. Throughout the premises, solar energy is employed to enhance green energy efficiency, reducing  GHG emissions by more than 270,000 tCO2eq, or equal to 300,000-rai of trees planted. The complex operates on a basis of clear and concrete guidelines as follows:

  • Green energy From the use of agricultural waste, whether bagasse or sugarcane leaves, through to producing biomass power, solar energy is adopted to promote green energy throughout the production process of the entire premises. Green energy has been developed to achieve high efficiency, reducing losses and cutting fossil fuel amounts while mitigating GHG emissions by over 185,000 tCO2eq.
  • Wastewater management system Withthe traditional space-consuming and GHG generating system being replaced by highly efficient activated sludge treatment technology, the resulting treated water has decent quality and is reusable while GHG emissions are minimized by over 10,000 tCO2eq.
  • Carbon Offset Mitr Phol Group has offset 75,000 tCOeq from participating in Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER).

Additionally, Mitr Phol Group has proactive approaches in place, among which include development of agricultural products under the BCG principles, promotion of cutting green sugarcane and expansion of reforestation areas to enlarge green spaces in Thailand. Mitr Phol Group aims at further introducing the carbon neutrality model to other factories under its roof in order to continue the Group’s commitment to leading the organization toward the net-zero target and conforming to Thailand’s climate change policy.
