Thai Union reports 99.9% responsibly sourced Tuna in 2025 sustainability report

Thai Union Group PCL has published its latest Sustainability Report, marking 10 years of leadership in responsible tuna sourcing. The report outlines the company’s progress across its seafood supply chain. Since setting its Global Tuna Sustainability Goals in 2015, the company now sources more than 99.9% of its tuna responsibly, maintains 95% on-the-water monitoring coverage, can trace 100% of its tuna back to the vessel of origin, and has expanded worker welfare coverage.

Thiraphong Chansiri, President & CEO of Thai Union Group, stated that keeping oceans healthy and maintaining responsible supply chains are essential to ensuring seafood continues to feed the global population. He noted that the company’s decade-long tuna initiative demonstrates the value of setting clear goals and working with partners, adding that the company remains focused on building responsible supply chains to protect oceans, support people, and sustain future generations.

The report, which is available for download, aligns these milestones with SeaChange®, Thai Union’s global sustainability strategy. It details the company’s efforts on fisheries improvement, labor standards at sea, and long-term accountability across its tuna supply chain.

Core Sourcing, Welfare, and Compliance Metrics

Key achievements across Thai Union’s wild-caught seafood operations include:

  • 99% of sourced tuna comes from fisheries that are Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified, in MSC assessment, or engaged in Fishery Improvement Projects.
  • 99% coverage of tuna supply chain volume is managed through Thai Union’s Fisher Work & Welfare program, Vessel Code of Conduct audits, Vessel Improvement Plans, or equivalent initiatives.
  • 100% traceability is maintained for sourced tuna through both digital and paper records, enabling the identification of the specific vessel or group of vessels where the catch originated.
  • 95% on-the-water monitoring coverage is established across the tuna supply chain to provide independent visibility into fishing activities at sea.
  • 100% compliance with International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) conservation measures across Thai Union processing facilities, verified by independent third-party audits.
  • 100% compliance with Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMO) requirements, ensuring no tuna is sourced from vessels blacklisted for illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer at Thai Union, added that progress in tuna sustainability requires patience, persistence, and collaboration. He stated that the process is complex because it involves managing details regarding fishery improvements, tracing tuna, verifying standards, and ensuring fair treatment of workers at sea.

Broader Sustainability Agenda and Global Performance Rankings

Beyond tuna operations, the report details how Thai Union utilizes partnerships to drive its wider sustainability agenda. This includes responsible shrimp sourcing, lower-carbon aquaculture, ghost gear recovery, sustainable finance, ecosystem restoration, eco-friendly packaging development, worker welfare reinforcement, and community support.

The company’s sustainability performance received global recognition in 2025 through the following benchmarks:

  • Achieved a score of 89 out of 100 in S&P Global’s 2025 Corporate Sustainability Assessment.
  • Ranked No. 1 globally in the Food Products industry under the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices (formerly the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices).
  • Secured an A- rating in CDP’s 2025 climate disclosure, placing the company in the “Leadership” category for verified progress and sector performance.
