BKNIX announces Opening of sixth internet exchange service point 

The Thai Network Information Center Foundation (THNIC Foundation) and BKNIX, the first neutral Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Thailand, proudly announce the success of the 7th BKNIX Peering Forum. This annual event serves as a premier platform for managers and engineers in the Internet industry to exchange knowledge and foster business opportunities for Internet connectivity and content service providers.  

The BKNIX Peering Forum has consistently brought together industry leaders and professionals to explore the latest advancements in Internet connectivity. This year’s forum marks a significant milestone for BKNIX as they unveil the opening of the sixth location for their internet exchange service point (PoP). This expansion aims to enhance the diversity and stability of Internet services throughout Thailand.

Dr. Gothom Arya, Chairman of the THNIC Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the growth of BKNIX, stating, “We are delighted to witness the steady growth of BKNIX. The addition of a new internet exchange service point will further augment the geographical diversity and improve Internet service stability in Thailand.

Prof. Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut, Vice Chairman of THNIC Foundation and recipient of the prestigious Internet Pioneer Award from the Internet Society and the Postel Service Award for those who have contributed to the Internet community, has worked as a driving force behing the BKNIX Project. She said, “Since BKNIX was established nine years ago, it was not only the beginning of a neutral domestic internet information exchange center, but also the starting point of the knowledge-sharing platform, the “BKNIX Peering Forum”. This forum has grown in popularity and serves as an event that promotes the growth of the Internet industry, ultimately benefiting more and more users.”

The BKNIX Peering Forum 2023 featured a captivating keynote speech, entitled “A Close Look at Remote Peering”, delivered by Dr. Marinho Barcellos, an esteemed expert in Network Security and Programmable Networks from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. The event also spotlighted a wide range of compelling topics, including Last Mile Connectivity: Addressing the Affordable Frontier, Internet Measurement, The SEA-5 – Spotlight on Thailand’s Data Center Market and The Landscape of Chinese IXP. Moreover, the event honored the presence of numerous distinguished Thai and international experts, including Philip Smith and Greg Shepherd from NSRC, Jonathan Brewer, Jamie Gillespie from APNIC, Pichit Satattayanon from International Gateway, Kempei Fukuda from NTT and many others.

In addition to fostering valuable knowledge exchange with the esteemed speakers mentioned earlier, the event also served as a platform for promoting peering and collaboration among participants. These participants comprised a diverse range of entities, including  Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Content Delivery Network Providers (CDNs), Internet Data Center Providers (IDCs), Carriers, Exchange Center Providers (IXPs) and other relevant service providers.

Representing a total of 19 countries, both domestic and international attendees from Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam gathered to contribute to the event’s success. The event drew the attendance of over 330 professionals from the telecommunications and internet industry, reaffirming its significance as a prominent networking platform.

The success of the BKNIX Peering Forum 2023 was made possible by the invaluable support of numerous esteemed organizations. These include Opengear, ETIX Everywhere, ISOC, AWS, STT GDC Thailand, JPNAP, APNIC, TCC Technology Group, Symphony, Netflix, Cable Connect, Telehouse, BBIX, NTT Global IP Network, ICANN, Google, .TH, and NSRC. Their contributions and collaboration have played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s effectiveness and significance within the industry.
