Microsoft Corp. has announced a major expansion in Thailand with an investment exceeding US$1 billion (approx. 36 billion THB) between 2026 and 2028. The initiative focuses on world-class cloud and AI infrastructure, aiming to enhance national competitiveness and provide digital skilling for millions of Thai citizens under the “Advancing National Growth, Prosperity, and Global Competitiveness with AI” framework.
Strategic Foundation for Digital Economy and S-Curve Industries
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that this investment is a cornerstone of the national strategy to establish Thailand as a regional hub for the digital and AI economy. The goal is to prepare the country for opportunities in new S-curve industries while equipping the workforce with advanced technological capabilities.
Brad Smith, Microsoft Vice Chair and President, highlighted that access to world-class technology is central to national growth. “Microsoft is proud to support Thailand’s vision for secure cloud and AI, combining trusted infrastructure and skills so AI adoption translates into real competitiveness and job creation,” Smith remarked.
Three Strategic Priorities: Technology, Trust, and Talent
The expanded partnership focuses on three key areas to drive Thailand’s AI-powered future:
- Technology: An investment of over US$1 billion will be directed toward building cloud and AI data center regions in Thailand. These facilities adhere to global standards for performance and sustainability, including green energy and water positivity. Microsoft has secured strategic partnerships with local leaders such as Gulf Development, AIS, CP Group, True Corporation, and True IDC.
- Trust: Microsoft is collaborating with the Office of the Council of State (OCS) to develop legal and governance frameworks. A notable project is TH2OECD, an AI-powered system built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI that analyzes Thai laws against international OECD standards to support Thailand’s OECD accession bid.
- Talent: Building on the 2 million people already skilled in the past two years, Microsoft aims to upskill an additional 150,000 workers through the Department of Skill Development (DSD). Furthermore, the National Digital Learning Platform (NDLP) will be modernized with AI tools for over 600,000 high school students.
Accelerating AI Diffusion to Close the Economic Gap
The investment aims to address the “AI diffusion” gap—the rate at which AI is adopted across a workforce. Microsoft data indicates that while the Global North sees an adoption rate of 1 in 4 workers, the Global South stands at 1 in 7. To bolster local innovation, Microsoft and the USTDA are providing a combined grant and credit package worth over US$1.2 million to Thai AI developer AI-ssistance to scale solutions for the e-commerce sector.
“AI is a powerful force for inclusive growth,” said Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand. He emphasized that putting AI in the hands of every Thai citizen—from SMEs to government agencies—will create genuine competitive advantages and new opportunities for the country.
