Yodchanan opens NSTFair 2026 to promote youth science and technology skills

The National Science and Technology Fair 2026 (NSTFair 2026) has officially opened, emphasizing the development of scientific skills among Thai youth to expand career and income opportunities amid rapid technological shifts and Artificial Intelligence (AI) trends impacting job security.

This year’s event focuses on utilizing science to advance high-value agriculture and develop medical products tailored for an aging society. Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Science Award 2026 was presented to honor outstanding young scientists and teachers for their achievements in science and innovation.

Prof. Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) stated that rapid technological advancements and Artificial Intelligence (AI) require preparing youth through out-of-classroom learning and practical experimentation. He noted that the fair aims to inspire attendees to apply knowledge to address challenges in health, the environment, and food security, building a foundation for Thailand’s future workforce.

Prof. Dr. Supachai reported that the 2026 event involves collaboration across more than 96 agencies from eight countries. Highlight exhibitions include a tribute to King Mongkut (Rama IV), the “AI Revolution” exhibition, the “Rare Earth” mineral exhibition, the “Over The Bloom” flower showcase, and “The Hidden World of Rangelands.” The event also displays research from MHESI agencies, including Thailand’s “CE-7 MATCH” scientific instrument for lunar exploration, alongside interactive Science Lab experiments and Coding & AI workshops hosted by NSM.

During the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Yodchanan presented the Prime Minister’s Science Award 2026 across seven categories. Five Youth Project Awards were awarded to students from Bangkok Christian College and The Prince Royal’s College for innovations including an automated pest control system, cervical cancer screening biomarkers, coral restoration, an AI application for malaria diagnosis (MalariaX), and a stroke screening platform (StrokeSight). Two Teacher Awards were presented to Somchok Kaew-uthas from Khon Kaen University Demonstration School and Chanjira Chai-in-tri-at from Montfort College.

The National Science and Technology Fair 2026 runs from 15 to 23 August 2026 at Halls 9 to 11, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. Regional Science Fairs are also scheduled from 18 to 20 August 2026 at Maejo University in Chiang Mai Province and Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University.
