51Talk marks 15 years, targets Thai market

Online English education provider 51Talk marked its 15th anniversary on Friday by announcing a brand update and a targeted marketing push in Southeast Asia, appointing Thai actor Shahkrit Yamnarm and his family as its new regional brand ambassadors.

Founded in 2011, the company reports reaching over 40 million students across 50 countries. The platform operates primarily on a one-on-one tutoring model, pairing learners with a roster of more than 10,000 TESOL-certified teachers.

As part of its anniversary announcements, 51Talk introduced updates to its proprietary “AirClass” system, which features an AI-integrated curriculum and gamified lessons. To increase engagement among primary-aged students, the company also debuted a new interactive digital mascot named “Toki” to guide users through the software.

Roger Parodi, Head of Strategy at 51Talk, stated that while the company increasingly relies on AI to optimize individual study paths, the core of its business model remains the interaction between human instructors and students. Parodi identified Thailand as a key pillar for the company’s continued growth across the Southeast Asian market.

The appointment of Yamnarm, alongside his wife Ann Pattira and their seven-year-old son Nong Bodhi, underscores the platform’s demographic focus on young learners and families. In a statement regarding the partnership, Yamnarm indicated that the platform’s flexible schedule and interactive, one-on-one structure suited his family’s needs. His son, Bodhi, noted that the conversational and gamified format of the lessons has helped build his public speaking confidence for traditional school environments.

The company is currently framing its regional marketing around a new campaign aimed at reducing the anxiety commonly associated with early language acquisition.
