In what constitutes one of the most substantial agricultural pivots in Southeast Asia, a major Thai poultry producer has publicly pledged to transition one million egg-laying hens to a cage-free system by 2027.
The commitment, formalized on March 9, 2026, by Chaiyapornsaha Farm Co., Ltd. in Suphanburi Province, marks a pivotal moment for the region’s commercial agriculture. Driven by a three-year systematic engagement strategy spearheaded by the social enterprise CATALYST, the transition underscores the viability of overhauling large-scale commercial farming.
Rather than relying solely on niche ethical certifications, the initiative utilizes integrated science-based frameworks to effect systemic transformation at a scale necessary for regional impact.
Scaling sector momentum
Chaiyapornsaha Farm has already commenced its implementation phase, having transitioned 50,000 hens as of early April. This momentum is bolstered by parallel commitments within the sector; Koh-Taew Co., Ltd. has pledged to transition 45,000 hens over a three-year period, while Thaweephant Phuket is expanding its cage-free operations by an additional 12,500 hens this year. Cumulatively, Thailand has secured commitments to transition over one million layer hens out of cages in 2026, representing transformative growth from 2025 metrics.
Bridging suppliers and buyers
The infrastructure underpinning this transition relies on CATALYST’s Good Life Framework Standard, sustained relationship building, and strategic partnerships with financial institutions. Furthermore, market viability is maintained through a platform known as “Happy Egg Connect,” which bridges verified cage-free suppliers with committed corporate buyers and food service entities across Thailand and Southeast Asia.
Pornchai Srisoontornthai, Vice President of CATALYST, stated that the industry’s momentum extends beyond individual corporate entities. According to Srisoontornthai, the successful shift of large-scale producers toward more ethical and sustainable models requires integrated strategies that concurrently address technical capacity, financial feasibility, and market access.
Mobilizing institutional support
This systemic approach has also catalyzed state-level institutional support. Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development, operating through its regional offices, has trained 98 farms across 15 provinces. Additionally, the department has formalized the initiative by issuing official cage-free manuals grounded in the Good Life Framework.
Representatives from CATALYST—an organization prioritizing collaboration with public health networks and operating under the principle of “One Health, One Welfare, One Planet”—emphasize that grounded, practical business solutions are essential for accelerating this agricultural transition across Asia.
