Google Cloud expanding Duet AI, across Google Workspace and Google Cloud

Google Cloud announced that Duet AI will now provide AI assistance across an even wider range of Google Cloud products and services to cloud users spanning employees, software developers, IT operators, data practitioners, and cybersecurity professionals.

Duet AI is an always-on AI collaborator that is deeply integrated in Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Duet AI in Google Workspace, now generally available, gives every user a writing helper, a spreadsheet expert, a project manager, a note taker for meetings, and a creative visual designer. Duet AI in Google Cloud collaborates like an expert coder, a software reliability engineer, a database pro, an expert data analyst, and a cybersecurity adviser – and is expanding its preview capabilities, with general availability coming later this year.

Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, said: “It’s been an exciting year so far for Google Cloud. We’ve achieved some noteworthy milestones, including in Q2 2023, reaching a US$32 billion annual revenue run rate and seeing our second quarter of profitability, which is all based on the success of our customers across every industry. We unveiled Duet AI at Google I/O in May, introducing powerful new features across Workspace and showcasing developer features such as code and chat assistance in Google Cloud. Since then, trusted testers around the world have experienced the power of Duet AI while we worked on expanding capabilities and integrating it across a wide range of products and services throughout Workspace and Google Cloud. Today, we’re proud to announce new ways we’re helping every business, government, and user benefit from generative AI and leading cloud technologies.”

Now Available: Duet AI in Google Workspace

Google Workspace is the world’s most popular productivity tool, with more than three billion users and more than 10 million paying customers who rely on it every day to get things done. Since Duet AI in Google Workspace was introduced, Google Cloud has delivered a number of features to act as users’ coach, source of inspiration, and productivity booster. These features include helping to write and refine content in Gmail and Google Docs, creating original images in Google Slides, turning ideas into action and data into insights with Google Sheets, and fostering more meaningful connections in Google Meet – all while ensuring every user and organization has control over their data. Organizations can now get started with Duet AI in Google Workspace with a no-cost trial.

Aparna Pappu, General Manager and Vice President, Google Workspace, said: “Sometimes it feels like there isn’t enough time in the day – with so many emails, so many meetings, and countless action items to follow up on, work can feel daunting. What if you had an intelligent, real-time collaboration partner that dramatically reduced that burden? With Duet AI, you get to focus on what really matters while it can take care of the rest.”

“Imagine you’re a financial analyst and you get an email at 5 PM from your boss asking for a presentation on Q3 performance by 8 AM tomorrow. Instead of scrambling through forecasts in Sheets, P&L Docs, Monthly Business Review Slides, and reading emails from the regional sales leads, you’ll soon be able to simply ask Duet AI to do the heavy lifting with a prompt like “create a summary of Q3 performance.” Duet AI can create a whole new presentation, complete with text, charts, and images, based on your relevant content in Google Drive and Gmail. A last-minute request that once called for an all-nighter, can now be completed before dinner time,” added Pappu.

The next wave of AI innovation in Google Workspace

Google Cloud also announced new enhancements to Duet AI in Google Workspace: Duet AI in Google Meet and Duet AI in Google Chat.

To help employees better engage during meetings, Duet AI in Google Meet removes the burden of note-taking and sending out recaps. It can capture notes, action items, and video snippets in real-time with the new “take notes for me” feature and send a summary to attendees after the meeting. It can even help latecomers get up to speed with “summary so far,” which gives a quick snapshot of everything they have missed. For users who cannot make a meeting but have inputs to share, the “attend for me” feature allows Duet AI to join the meeting on their behalf, delivering their message and ensuring they get the recap.

The most important part of any meeting is being clearly seen, heard, and understood, but sometimes things can get in the way, such as camera and sound quality, a slow internet connection, or language barriers. Duet AI in Google Meet will help ensure meeting attendees look and sound their best with studio look, studio lighting, and studio sound. With the launch of automatic translated captions for 18 languages, including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese, Google Meet will automatically detect when another language is spoken and display the translation in real-time.

Not every conversation needs a meeting, and sometimes collaboration happens on the go. Employees might just need a quick chat to connect with their team or solve a problem. Google Chat now makes that a whole lot easier with a refreshed user interface, new shortcuts, and enhanced search for users to stay on top of conversations. They can now also chat directly with Duet AI to ask questions about their content, get a summary of the documents shared in a space, and catch up on missed conversations.

When users need to talk things through in real-time, they can switch to voice in an instant with huddles in Google Chat, right from the space where they are already collaborating. Huddles are audio-first, impromptu gatherings powered by Google Meet that help distributed teams come together in real-time without having to jump into a separate scheduled meeting. Moreover, with support for up to 500,000 participants, it is now easier for organizations to build larger communities across Google Chat.

Upholding user privacy and security has always been a bedrock principle for Google Workspace. Duet AI continues to uphold this promise. Each user can be assured that their interactions with Duet AI are private. No other user will see their data and Google does not use their data to train its models without their permission. Building on these core commitments, Google Workspace recently announced new capabilities to help prevent cyber-threats, provide safer work with built-in zero trust controls, and better support organizations’ digital sovereignty and compliance needs.

A new way to cloud for developers, IT operators, data practitioners, and cybersecurity professionals

Beyond Google Workspace, Duet AI can now provide AI assistance across a wide range of Google Cloud products and services – as a coding assistant to help developers code faster, as an expert adviser to help operators quickly troubleshoot application and infrastructure issues, as a data analyst to provide quick and better insights, and as a security adviser to recommend best practices to help prevent cyber-threats.

Advancements for Duet AI in Google Cloud include:

  • Software development: Duet AI provides expert assistance across the entire software development lifecycle, enabling developers to stay in flow-state longer by minimizing context switching to help them be more productive. In addition to code completion and code generation, it can assist with code refactoring and building application programming interfaces (APIs) using simple natural language prompts.
  • Application and infrastructure operations: Operators can chat with Duet AI in natural language across a number of services directly in the Google Cloud Console to quickly retrieve “how to” information about infrastructure configuration, deployment best practices, and expert recommendations on cost and performance optimization.
  • Data analytics: Duet AI in BigQuery provides contextual assistance for writing SQL queries as well as Python code, generates full functions and code blocks, auto-suggests code completions and explains SQL statements in natural language, and can generate recommendations based on your schema and metadata. Duet AI in Looker enables fast and simple conversational queries that empower non-technical users to “talk” with their business data – much in the same way you “ask Google” a question, get answers, and refine results into visuals and reports.
  • Accelerating and modernizing databases: Duet AI in Cloud Spanner, AlloyDB and Cloud SQL, helps generate code to structure, modify, or query data using natural language.
  • Security operations: Duet AI is also coming to security products, including Chronicle Security Operations, Mandiant Threat Intelligence, and Security Command Center, which can empower security professionals to more efficiently prevent threats, reduce toil in security workflows, and uplevel security talent.

“Customers are already realizing value from Duet AI in Google Cloud: L’Oréal is able to achieve better and faster business decisions from their data, and Turing, in early testing, is reporting engineering productivity gains of one-third. Duet AI delivers contextual recommendations from PaLM 2 large language models (LLMs) and expert guidance, trained and tuned with Google Cloud-specific content, such as documentation, sample code, and Google Cloud best practices.

In addition, Duet AI was designed using Google’s comprehensive approach to help protect customers’ security and privacy, as well as our AI principles. With Duet AI, your data is your data. Your code, your inputs to Duet AI, and your recommendations generated by Duet AI will not be used to train any shared models nor used to develop any products,” added Kurian.
