Starbucks inviting customers to bring their own cups to reduce waste by half by 2030

Starbucks Thailand unveiled the “LITTLE CHOICES. BIG CHANGES.” campaign, which urges customers to actively contribute to the brand’s sustainability efforts by bringing their personal cups to any Starbucks location in the country. Aligning with Starbucks’ ambitious goal to halve waste by 2030, this campaign plays a critical role in fostering a more sustainable future.

Starbucks is dedicated to Living our Promises to partners, customers, communities, coffee farmers, and the planet with every cup of coffee. The LITTLE CHOICES. BIG CHANGES. campaign is critical to the brand’s bold sustainability goal to reduce our carbon footprint, waste, and water usage by 50% by 2030.

This year, Starbucks Thailand is set to diminish single-use waste (namely, plastic cups) to 50% by incentivizing customers with a 10 baht discount each time they use their own cups at any Starbucks store.

Since 1998 when the brand launched in Thailand, Starbucks customers have contributed to the reduction of over 29 million pieces of single-use waste by opting for personal cups.

Additionally, Starbucks has launched the “Grounds for Your Garden” program, allowing customers to collect used coffee grounds from any Starbucks for home gardening purposes. In 2023, over 4,000 kilograms of coffee grounds have been distributed nationwide. Moreover, since last year to date, Starbucks Thailand achieved certification for twelve “Greener Stores,” powered entirely by electricity and equipped with advanced energy monitoring capabilities through a sophisticated Energy Management System (EMS). This system collects real-time energy consumption data, ensuring high operational efficiency and energy conservation by pinpointing and addressing inefficiencies.

Elevating Environmental Responsibility to New Heights

To affirm our commitment on Sustainability, Starbucks Thailand is pleased to welcome Juthatip Kengmana as the new Social Impact & Sustainability Manager, poised to guide the brand towards fulfilling its environmental commitments with strategies tailored to the unique needs of the country.

  • Partnerships and Brand Initiatives: Starbucks Thailand is steadfast in its mission to minimize plastic usage in daily operations, encouraging both customers and partners to engage in sustainable practices. This includes opting for recycled paper bags and tissues, as well as declining the use of plastic cutlery. In a notable collaboration with environmental architect Associate Professor Dr. Singh Intrachooto, our partners have innovatively repurposed coffee grounds into functional items like coasters, and trays, coffee tables enhancing the eco-friendliness of our stores. Additionally, our team actively participates in the annual World Water Day Program with Planet Water Foundation, building 5 Aqua Towers to provide clean water to needed area reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
  • Supporting Coffee Farmers and Communities: Our commitment extends to the global coffee farming community, with a special focus on the hilltribe coffee farmers in northern Thailand. In partnership with the Integrated Tribal Development Foundation (ITDF), we are devoted to providing holistic support to these communities. Our efforts include enhancing school facilities, healthcare, well-being, and living conditions. Moreover, we offer specialized coffee training to villagers, aiming to improve their coffee quality control skills and adherence to C.A.F.E. Practices.

Nednapa Srisamai, the Managing Director of Starbucks Thailand, asserts, “We are dedicated to taking meaningful steps towards our Environmental Promise, striving to give back more than we take. As we aim to cut carbon emissions, water usage, and waste by half by 2030, we recognize the vital role everyone plays in this journey. Together, we can make a significant positive impact on our planet.”

Join the Starbucks Experience and Make a Difference: Starbucks Thailand invites customers to actively participate in the LITTLE CHOICES. BIG CHANGES. Campaign. By making small, mindful decisions—like opting for ForHere cups when dining in or bringing personal (or reusable) cups for takeaway orders, customers can contribute to significant environmental change. Additionally, customers who bring their own cups receive a 10 THB discount. The brand anticipates 50% growth of personal cup usage to over 3 million personal (reusable) cups in stores by the end of 2024.
